1970 Plymouth Superbird

INTRODUCTION

Here's one of the wildest production cars ever built. So radical, they were tough to sell when they were new. Today, they're among the most coveted of all muscle cars. This is an excellent example, very nicely restored and tastefully upgraded with Hotchkis suspension and a 6 barrel set up. Highly desirable white bucket seat interior really sets this one apart.

EXTERIOR

The Superbird is one of the most recognizable muscle cars ever built, thanks to its legendary aerodynamic nose cone and towering rear wing. Those iconic features, along with the extended front fenders and hood, functional fender scoops, flush-mounted rear window, and stainless trim covering the C-pillars, were all designed to improve high speed stability while creating a look that's unmistakable. This example has an excellent body that's straight, solid, and free of any visible rust or damage. It's been refinished in its original Tor-Red and polished to a smooth, glossy shine. While there are a few minor imperfections, the overall presentation is outstanding. The glass appears to have been replaced, the vinyl top looks fresh, and the stainless trim has been polished. The bumpers, mirrors, and door handles appear to be replaced. It also wears the bold Superbird graphics that complete its unmistakable look. A brand new set of 15-inch rallye wheels wrapped in Cooper Cobra tires, with wider rubber in the rear, gives it an aggressive stance, while the vacuum operated hideaway headlights remain one of the Superbird's coolest factory features.

INTERIOR

The white bucket seat interior is a major highlight and a big selling point, as it's one of the most desirable options and can add significant value to a Superbird. The seats have been professionally recushioned and reupholstered, while the door panels and armrests have been replaced for a fresh, like new appearance. Fresh carpet is protected by Road Runner floor mats, and the original center console is in very nice condition. Up front, it features a new dash pad, a restored instrument panel with replaced gauges, a factory AM/8-track radio, a reproduction steering wheel, and the in dash tachometer. Overhead, the headliner and visors have been replaced, the dome light is functional, and it retains a complete set of original seat belts. It's a bright, clean, and beautifully presented interior that really complements the car.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT

Lifting the hood reveals a period correct 440 that's been upgraded with the highly desirable Six-Barrel induction system, featuring three Holley carburetors beneath the correct factory air cleaner. It has the authentic stock manifolds, valve covers, pulleys, and other factory style components, giving it the proper original appearance. It also features reproduction spark plug wires, power steering, and power brakes for easy cruising. The correct Mopar radiator is in place, along with a Road Runner horn, restored wiper motor, and complete windshield washer squirters. The engine bay is nicely painted, and the original fender tag remains in place.TRUNK COMPARTMENT: It is clean, solid, and correctly finished in Tor Red, matching the rest of the car. It's complete with both factory jacks, including the rear bumper jack and the front scissors jack. It also includes the spare tire and trunk mat, making it complete.UNDERSIDE: It is every bit as impressive as the rest of the car. The steering and suspension have been completely rebuilt and upgraded with Hotchkis performance components, it's reportedly been featured on a Hotchkis promotional poster. It features tubular front control arms, gas shocks, and upgraded front and rear sway bars for confident handling. The factory style dual exhaust includes the correct crossover pipe, mufflers, and chrome tips exiting below the rear bumper. The fuel tank is fresh, and the braking system consists of front disc brakes, rear drums, and a functional emergency brake. Looking up at the engine, everything is exceptionally clean, including a high-torque starter. The Torqueflite automatic transmission looks fresh, with a rebuilt driveshaft leading back to the 8¾-inch rear end equipped with the optional Performance Axle Package featuring 3.55 Sure Grip gears. The floors appear rock solid and are neatly undercoated, while factory looking frame connectors tie the front and rear frame rails together to reduce body flex and improve handling. Every component underneath is fresh, clean, and beautifully detailed.SUPERBIRD STORY: In 1969 the Dodge Daytona was built to win NASCAR races. The engineers at Mopar squeezed all the horsepower they could out of their cars, so they called in a rocket scientist to increase speed with aerodynamics. Every bend, curve and arch served a purpose. It wasn't for show, it was to win races and that is what it did. It was the first car to ever exceed 200 mph on a closed-circuit track. Over at Plymouth their star NASCAR driver, Richard Petty, was handicapped by the limitations of the Road Runner so he jumped ship and went to Ford. In 1970 it was Plymouth that would carry on the Winged Warrior program with the Superbird. It was an attempt to lure back Petty and win races, both were achieved. As a matter of fact, it won so many races it caused its own demise. The top speeds these cars were achieving caused NASCAR to change their rules which brought a quick end to the Winged Warriors. NASCAR regulations said the manufacturers had to offer whatever they were racing as a production car to the public. Each one was hand assembled at a remote location. They were rather obnoxious looking and impractical as an everyday car so they collected dust at the dealer showrooms, some dealers went as far as to remove the nose and wing.
