The 2000 GXL model was the top of the range for the MK3 Cortina line, as they didn’t do the Ghia specification, but it gave you the luxury and the sporting appearance. It was quite a clever combination, offering touches such as additional chrome detailing, vinyl roof and ungraded trim. The MK3 introduced Ford’s ‘coke bottle’ styling to the family saloon market, instantly giving the Cortina a more modern and American-inspired look. In 1972 the GXL trim level had become the most luxurious version available.

This Ford Cortina 2000 GXL is finished in period correct styling with the desirable GXL trim package, with the alloy wheels with chrome embellishers and twin headlights. This makes it just that little bit different with a touch of Americana and maybe a little menacing, but a great look nevertheless. If you had one of these back in the day, you were probably a bit of a big hitter in your circle. Representing one of Ford’s most popular family saloons of the era, now increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

This example is finished in red, one of the most desirable period colours that perfectly complements the model’s ‘coke bottle’ styling. It has original floors, sills, arches, and flitches. The interior is black vinyl and currently has a wooden steering wheel, although the original is included, and it also has an aftermarket radio, again the original is included. You also have three nodding dogs on the back parcel shelf, and a fury dice hanging from the rear view mirror too, which are nice little touches and very 70s. What a decade for great cars, glam rock music and great personalisation of your daily drive!

Powered by the robust 2.0 litre pinto inline-four engine and rear-wheel drive, the vendor has also fitted a 5-speed gearbox and electronic ignition. Delivering both reliability and a smooth driving experience, these are great things to do and don’t jump out at you as having been changed which please the purists amongst us.

The paperwork is equally as impressive, with a large file full including details regarding all things MK3 Cortinas, as well as original newspaper cuttings and Ford literature. We have some lovely professional photos of the Cortina and details from the Ford Owner’s Club (of which it was a member), and owner’s handbooks. The vendor has kept the Ford MOT’d, even though it is not required, which gives you confidence that it has been cared for and cherished. The more you look, the more you see attention to detail. We are never going to tell you it’s perfect, but it is extremely nice and needs to be seen. It’s getting very hard to find a Cortina that is unmolested and as good as this.
