Description

Chassis No. 344678N172010

In the 1960s, there were just three numbers that struck fear into the hearts of Oldsmobile's enemies: 442. The 442's intentions were unmistakable: the name itself referenced the formula of four-barrel carburetion, a four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhaust tips-signaling Oldsmobile's answer to the growing American muscle-car arms race. Although it was introduced in 1964 as a high-performance trim option for the Cutlass and F-85, the 442 nameplate was officially canonized in the Oldsmobile model lexicon in 1968. Building upon the Cutlass' already well-appointed equipment, the 442 added enhanced shock absorbers and wheels shod in special tires, heavy-duty springs, a stabilizer bar, and distinct styling touches including hood louvers, unique emblems, and a contrasting hood stripe. The cream of the 442's crop however was its uprated 400 cu-in V8, producing at least 350 horsepower depending on other upgrade packages.

This 1968 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible is equipped with the highly desirable W-30 package, which incorporates an Outside Air Induction (OAI) ram-air intake system to coax an additional 10-horsepower of grunt out of the 442's V8, and also adds red inner fender wells. Although this car is currently fitted with the W-30 package, there are no factory records to confirm it was built this way, as Oldsmobile did not begin retaining such records until 1977. The car is finished in correct Ebony Black according to its trim tag, and features a matching interior with leather-trimmed bucket seats.

While the intervening decades have obscured this example's ownership trail, its excellent condition speaks clearly to the care it has received over the years. This example is believed to have been restored at one point by 442 specialists Thornton Autoworks in Telford, Pennsylvania, and the quality of its current presentation supports this belief. Crucially, the 442 is believed to retain its original engine block according to the consigning specialist, complete with its all-important OAI system under the hood.

Offered from a remarkable private collection of significant cornerstones of classic high-performance, this 1968 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Convertible is an early and well-equipped example of Oldsmobile's star muscle car that is prepared to challenge its period rivals with the top raised or lowered.
